What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a Government of Canada program that helps eligible Canadian residents access dental care. It is intended for people who meet the program’s requirements and do not have access to private dental insurance.

Eligibility is based on several factors, including:

You can review the current requirements on the official Government of Canada Canadian Dental Care Plan page.

Does the Canadian Dental Care Plan Cover Everything?

No. The CDCP provides helpful dental coverage, but it does not always pay 100% of the total treatment cost. There are two main reasons why you may need to pay part of your dental bill.

Your Income May Affect Your Co-payment

Your CDCP co-payment level is based on your adjusted family net income.

Under the current CDCP rules:

You can learn more about co-payments and additional costs on the Government of Canada’s official CDCP coverage page.

The CDCP and Saskatchewan Fee Amounts May Be Different

The CDCP has its own established fees for dental services. Dental clinics may set their fees using information such as the Saskatchewan Suggested Fee Guide.

The amount in the CDCP fee guide may be different from the amount charged by a dental clinic. If the clinic’s fee is higher than the amount the CDCP pays, you may be responsible for paying the difference.

This means you could still have an out-of-pocket cost even if your CDCP information says you have a 0% co-payment.

The College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan’s Suggested Fee Guide explains how the provincial guide is used. It is a suggested guide, so Saskatchewan dentists are not required to use every fee listed in it.

We Can Provide an Estimate Before Treatment

Before treatment begins, our team can prepare and submit an estimate. This can help confirm:

Important Things to Know About the CDCP

When comparing a dental bridge vs implant, many Regina residents consider factors like treatment time and jawbone health. While an implant is a standalone solution, a dental bridge is often a faster process, requiring fewer visits to our downtown office. During your consultation, we will review your Restorative Dentistry options to ensure the choice aligns with your lifestyle and long-term oral health goals.

Coverage is Based on Household Income

Your CDCP co-payment level is based on your adjusted family net income. Your income may affect how much the plan pays toward an eligible service.

The Plan Must be Renewed Every Year

CDCP coverage does not renew automatically.

Each CDCP benefit period ends on June 30. Members must renew during the Government of Canada’s announced renewal period. Renewing on time can help prevent a gap in coverage.

Visit the official CDCP renewal page for current renewal dates and instructions.

Applicants Must File Their Taxes

You and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, must file your Canadian tax returns. The government uses this information to check your adjusted family net income and eligibility.

Each Family Member Must be Included Separately

Every family member who needs CDCP coverage must be included as an individual applicant. Approval for one family member does not automatically provide coverage for everyone in the family.

Every Person Receives an Individual CDCP Number

Each approved person receives their own CDCP member ID, sometimes called a certificate number. Please provide the correct member information for each patient when booking an appointment.

What Dental Services Can Be Covered by the CDCP?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan may help pay for several types of dental care.

Services that may be covered include:

Dental Exams

Dental exams allow the dentist to check your teeth, gums and mouth for signs of decay, infection or other dental problems.

Dental Cleanings and Preventive Care

The CDCP may help cover cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants and other preventive services.

Dental X-rays

X-rays help the dentist find problems that may not be visible during a regular dental exam.

Dental fillings

Dental fillings are used to repair teeth affected by cavities or minor damage.

Root Canals

Root canal treatment may be covered when it meets the CDCP’s rules. Some repeat treatments may require preauthorization.

Tooth Extractions

Simple and surgical tooth extractions may be covered when they are necessary and meet CDCP requirements.

Dentures

Complete and partial dentures may be covered. Some types of dentures require approval before treatment begins.

Dental Crowns

Certain dental crown services may be covered when they meet the plan’s rules. Crowns generally require preauthorization.

An estimate or preauthorization is not a guarantee of payment. Your coverage must be active when treatment is provided. The final amount paid will depend on the CDCP rules and fees in place on the treatment date.
