Our 5 Dental Tips
Your regular oral health routine is probably effective, but there is more you can do to ensure a healthy mouth. Your dentist from Downtown Dental Centre has compiled 5 easy tips that will help you in your routine
1. Visit Your Dentist Regularly
The Canadian Dental Association has found that 3 out of 4 Canadians will go to their dentist once a year to make sure that their mouth is healthy- which is great! (Twice a year is even better…but we can let you know what is best for your mouth.) Going to your dentist twice a year for a regular checkup will aid in the prevention of preventable oral diseases. Regular visits can help detect issues early, making it easier to treat before it gets out of hand.
2. Less Sugar in Your Diet
Sugar sure is a treat, but too much of it will compromise your health. A diet high in sugar will facilitate the creation of plaque in your mouth which will, over time, destroy the enamel that protects your teeth. The enamel is there to protect your teeth from breaking or from any form of decay and it is important to keep it strong. Reducing sugar intake and replacing it with more healthy food choices will help reduce the risk of tooth and gum diseases.
3. Stop Smoking
Smoking has a lot of consequences that are worse than just discoloration of your teeth. The tar and nicotine that is found in cigarettes will not only gradually attack your teeth and gums, but it can also create bacteria and multiple infections that can affect your oral health. Smoking can create medical complications on your tongue, your lips, your teeth, and gums.
4. Using the Right Technique
Brushing your teeth twice a day is a good start to keep a healthy mouth, but only if you are using the right technique. When brushing your teeth, keep your toothbrush at an angle of 45 degrees with your gums. Doing so will help you to clean under your gum line and between your teeth. Another easy tip is to make a circular motion when you are brushing. The last tip is to be gentle, if you are brushing your teeth too aggressively, you can damage your gums and teeth.
5. Flossing is Important
Flossing your teeth and gums will help you to keep a healthy mouth, but are you doing it right? Using the wrong technique to floss, the same as brushing can cause damage to your teeth and gums. When flossing, you should take approximately 12 inches of floss and use your index finger to hold it. Keep 2 to 3 inches of floss in between your fingers and use new floss for each tooth to avoid spreading bacteria. Start flossing today and feel the benefits of a clean mouth!
