Diabetes and Oral Health Problems

As the rate of diabetes climbs in Saskatchewan, so will the occurrence of oral health disease. “Diabetics have a lowered resistance to infection and higher potential for inflammation. In particular, people with diabetes are twice as likely as those without diabetes to develop gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums, which can progress to periodontal (gum) disease if left untreated. Periodontal disease may affect the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels. People with consistently high blood sugar levels are known to be at increased risk for serious complications such as blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and even amputation of extremities.” (Canadian Dental Hygienists Association)

What can you do to prevent further health issues if you are diabetic or prediabetic? Begin by booking an appointment with a dental hygienist. They will guide you in the best course of treatment – whether it’s having regular maintenance appointments at your dental office, or making a referral to a periodontist (gum specialist). Your gums don’t lie! If they are bleeding on a regular basis, it can become a major health issue. The good news is, the damage is reversible if you make the effort to care for yourself properly. Education is a big part of the hygienist’s job; they love to see a patient progress in their health. We would love to help you feel and look your best!
