How your nutrition affects your teeth.
It seems many people do not understand the direct correlation between what you eat and how your body feels. If you feed your body junk, it’s going to feel (and look) like that, too. Does that mean you can’t enjoy a treat now and then? NO WAY! Life is too short for that! A treat, however, is different from a meal. It’s a small chocolate, a few chips, half a can of pop,…you get the idea. Better yet, start to reframe your idea of what a ‘treat’ is for you. A flavourful piece of cheese, a few olives, peanut butter and apples, a handful of nuts, cut veggies – these are all fabulous ways of rewarding and nourishing yourself-and your teeth- throughout a busy day. And the amazing thing is, the more you cut sugar out of your diet, the less you will crave it. And of course, after you’ve enjoyed your treat (only ever eat it if you are truly enjoying it!), ensure to brush your teeth. Or if that’s not feasible, chew some sugarless gum.
There is encouraging news from the U.S. regarding warnings on food labels: The pioneering law (in San Francisco) mandates that warnings must cover 20% of ads. The ads also must warn of increased risks of obesity, diabetes, and dental caries from consuming these beverages.
We have a very healthy staff here at Downtown Dental Centre and the treats we enjoy the most are the ones that give us energy and make us feel (and look!!) great.
