Is Tongue-Tie Dangerous? Here’s What You Need to Know

What is Tongue-Tie?

Tongue-tie (or ankyloglossia) is the condition where the narrow piece of skin attached underneath the tongue holds the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Normally, this piece allows for flexibility and lets your tongue be positioned on the roof of your mouth. One of the most noticeable issues you will see in children with this condition is that they will have trouble eating properly. This is a genetic condition and can be seen in around 8% of the population in the US who are under the age of 12.

Is this Condition a Rising Concern?

Yes, absolutely. There are many countries that have seen this condition become extremely common among their population. A tongue-tie condition could be present for many years before it is discovered. Problems that may arise from the condition could be overlooked or ignored as it may seem normal in children of certain ages. Some early warning signs of tongue-tie can be problems that are just common and outgrown in children eventually, so it can be difficult to distinguish it from normal. Here are some signs that could potentially mean there is some sort of condition pertaining to your tongue.

How Does the Problem Resolve?

In some cases, the tongue-tie condition may be resolved on its own as the child develops. If the tie does not resolve on its own, then it may be best to have it cut either by a dentist trained in this procedure, or by an ENT doctor. It can be done with a scalpel or a soft tissue laser and is a very short procedure. In order for the tissue not to regrow it is important to be taught and follow through with the post operative stretches. These need to be done for 3-4 weeks following the surgery. A frenectomy procedure can be done for patients of all ages, so adults suffering from symptoms should not hesitate to fix the issue.
