Pain – or fear of pain- is a good thing. It’s what has kept mankind going. But when it inhibits you from taking charge of your oral health, it’s a problem. Mental roadblocks keep people from visiting the dentist regularly, which often results in worse problems, such as losing teeth, or needing major work such as root canals and crowns. So what can you do to combat your fear of the dentist? Read these great tips from chronicbodypain.net . Your brain is an amazing tool that can help you conquer your fear!
- Fantasize about delicious foods.
- Breathing and meditation – it always sounds obvious, but what is the first thing to go crazy when we are scared or stressed? Our breath. Concentrate on slowing it down and thinking calming thoughts (suntanning on the beach, walking in the forest, sipping a coffee…)
- Focus on other issues. While you get that filling done, compile your grocery list, or plan your next holiday.
- Bring your favourite music along.
- Think positive thoughts. You have the choice – negative thoughts will increase your perception of pain.
- Laugh! Share your stories with us, listen to Dr. Dodds’ ridiculous tales (or see his dance moves!) and relax.
We have had so many patients arrive here full of anxiety because of their fear of pain. Rarely does anyone leave feeling the same way (see our patient Reviews). We work with you to ease your anxiety by talking you through the procedure (or not, if that is your wish), providing breaks when needed, ensuring the work is done with your comfort in mind, and even holding your hand if that helps! We also have blankets, pillows, and warm cloths for after the procedure. Your health is important – and the mouth is an integral part of the entire system. Take care in there!
