Hand Scaling versus Ultrasonic Cleaning
Those of you who have been coming to us for hygiene appointments in the past few years may have noticed a few changes to how your hygienist cleans your teeth. Scaling is a term used to describe the actual cleaning of your teeth but there are many methods of accomplishing that goal. Hygienists have several kinds of tools in their arsenal, from various metal instruments called hand scalers to the newest ultrasonic cleaning instruments called a Cavitron. A Cavitron is a dental tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to clean teeth. The benefit of using it is there is less tissue trauma compared to hand instrumentation. Cavitation (“a phenomenon in which rapid changes of pressure in a liquid lead to the formation of small vapor-filled cavities, in places where the pressure is relatively low” – Wikipedia) of the water and the ultrasound waves kill bacteria. This greatly improves any inflammation around the gums.
Cavitron Ultrasonic Cleaning
Experiencing the Cavitron for the first time is a bit strange. It uses quite a lot of water, so suctioning is important. Some people describe it as a power washer for your teeth. It’s a water instrument that vibrates and sprays water creating little bubbles that pop the tarter off easily. It is especially helpful for large amounts of tarter and/or tenacious tarter. Hand scaling will always allow for more precise tartar removal and each hygienist will have their preference for attaining the same healthy result for your mouth.

Our hygienists will often use both hand scaling and the Cavitron, depending on your needs. As with all things, there are pros and cons to both methods and some people really prefer one method to another. You should discuss your options with your hygienist and have them explain why they would use one or the other, or both methods, to ensure your oral health is optimal.
