“Toothbrushing would not be so critical if we were eating a nutrient-dense diet that was anti-inflammatory. A study from BMC Oral Health (July 26, 2016) showed that a healthy diet would decrease the signs and symptoms of active gum disease without the rigors of cleaning between the teeth” reports Dr.Danenberg, DDS. What is a ‘healthy nutrient-dense diet” that fights inflammation? It’s all the things the entire body needs – vegetables of all colours, fruits, nuts, seeds, good proteins such as eggs, unprocessed meats, fish, legumes – and very limited sugars. Sugar causes inflammation in all areas of the body (including your brain! Studies are showing dementia is a form of diabetes of the brain), so limiting your intake can make a difference in all kinds of positive ways.
So brush, floss, rinse (a fluoridated mouthwash can be helpful), but watch for the extra ‘selling features’ such as whitening products that can actually cause discomfort for your gums. A healthy mouth is a sign of a healthy body. Take care in there! – Regina Dentist
